Transportation of bitumen requires the fulfillment of a whole list of requirements; if they are not met, the cargo can catch fire or even explode, leading to serious consequences and human casualties. In addition, special equipment must be used. The high demand for this material in construction and various industries makes it important to transport bitumen by road. Bitumen is a rather viscous liquid, and it burns no worse than gasoline or diesel fuel. The transportation of such material must be accompanied by appropriate permits. Bitumen is transported by road only in bitumen trucks that have a tank and a semi-trailer. Such a tank has double walls with an insulating layer to create a “thermos” effect. The bitumen is heated to 180 degrees during loading. Maintaining this temperature allows it to be loaded and unloaded by gravity. For this purpose, the tanker is equipped with special burners, allowing it to transport bitumen for up to two days.
The bitumen truck is also equipped with a float behind the tank, which indicates how much liquid is in the tank. Baffles are installed in the tank to reduce the water hammer of the tank swaying while driving. The tank must be firmly fixed and equipped with a ladder with an anti-slip coating and handrails, and equipped with control and measuring equipment. Reflective strips are applied to the tank, and fire extinguishing equipment must be available in the cab. The tank also needs to be systematically cleaned.
